  • WagnerTannhäuser Overture
  • Schumann - Piano Concerto in A minor
  • Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique

Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser is based upon two German legends: Tannhäuser the legendary medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. The overture contains many of the most important themes from the opera, including the Pilgrims’ Chorus, music associated with the world of Venusberg, and Tannhäuser’s ode to Venus. The original version of the opera premiered in Dresden, as was Schumann’s only piano concerto. This was based upon a one movement fantasy, that his wife, Clara, persuaded him to expand into this concerto. Schumann’s piano concerto received a more favourable reception than Tannhäuser, particularly for the way in which the orchestra is used.

Symphonie Fantastique tells the story of an artist with a lively imagination, who poisoned himself with opium in the depths of despair because of unrequited love. It includes a joyful scene at a ball but also a more gruesome march to the scaffold and the dance of the witches. A fantastical symphony but also enduringly popular.
